Johnny got his start at a time when mainstream media wasn't looking to capture images of black celebrities. Back then, Jay-Z could roll-out with Foxy Brown without flashing bulbs. Pioneers like Johnny, made black celebs more accessible by capturing them on film, turning them from household names into real people.
With a little determination, hustle and strong faith, this void created the perfect opportunity for Johnny to take over. Much of his early work involved snapping pics for VIBE's "In the Mix" section. He was surprised the first time the magazine's accounting department asked him "where they should send the invoice?". Soon after, he realized that he could not only get paid, but actually turn an impassioned hobby into a business.
Take a look at some pics from the event. (These photos were NOT taken by Johnny...finally, a day off!)
