Last night, the season premiere of BET's new faux reality show, Baldwin Hills, had us somewhat excited. We wanted to see an alternative to the over-sexed, out-of-control 20-somethings' on College Hill, we thought we'd get some insight into the notorious neighborhood known as the "Black Beverly Hills".
BH was presented in a similar docu-drama style as it's more vanilla counterpart, MTVs Laguna Beach, with obviously staged "encounters" and pitched conversation topics, but there might be something to be gained from watching...One of the plot lines, or themes, if you will, involve the "drama" (and likely coming together) of our pampered BH kids and less-spoiled Stacie, who lives in a neighboring 'hood with less extravagance. We're interested to see how/if BET viewers will take to the show. BET may even be able to attract a new audience mesmerized by rich kids who spend uncontrollably in shows like Super Sweet Sixteen, and The Hills where 18 year olds drive around in Benz coupes. Don't sleep on the cast of BH, because we already witnessed a spree at Ed Hardy with self-absorbed Gerren. We must admit, we already like Ashley, the daughter of Vanessa Bell Calloway and Jordan, an enterprising young fellow who might be the next Bob Johnson? Either way, we're definitely in it for the next few episodes...Check your local listings, and decide for yourself.

Ok so I must admit I was excited to watch the show however I seemed to get a little tired of the "act" that Stacie seemed to be playing. Ok she cusses at her mother. I could not and would not have done that at her age, but later she was chilling at the coffee shop. I don't know I live on the east coast and I have never as a teen ager just gone to get some coffee at the coffee shop. I am not ready to give up on the show yet. I would like to see BET really get up there with MTV. We shall see
ReplyDeleteI WAS SUPRISED BY THE SHOW. I ACTUALLY FOUND IT COMPLETELY HILARIOUS BECAUSE IT SEEMS SO STAGES AND VERY VERY SCRIPTED. IT SEEMS LIKE THEY HAVE TWO DRASTIC EXTREMES: THE POSH, ABSORBED KIDS AND THE HOODIE HOOD GIRL.
ReplyDeleteI disagree...No one on that show really has money, hasnt anyone seen the weathly kids in Boston...much more standing than baldwin hil
ReplyDeleteI am from the LA area, grew up there until I was 18 and went to college. Baldwin Hills is definitely not the "Black Beverly Hills"; maybe 10 years ago it was. Now it is just a nice middle class to upper middle class suburb of LA. There are other parts of southern california with large groups of African Americans that are a lot wealthier than those in Baldwin Hills...They made it seem like the gap between the two groups was just huge, I did not like that.
ReplyDeleteI expected more from the show..it seems like they are trying to be like laguna beach..and yea..who goes to a coffee shop by themselves and randomly bumps into the hills chicks??..faaaake..but i am goig to continue to watch the show.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I was not too impressed with Baldwin Hills. It looks like any middle class area in the US. I was expecting McMansions as far as the eye could see. It also looked very staged. Stacie just overacted with her "hood-ness" and Garnett overacted with her "upperclass-ness". No one really stands out yet.
ReplyDeleteI will continue to watch though.
WHUT WAS THE SWEATER JORDAN WORE IN THE SEASON PREMIERE OF THE FIRST SEASON? IT WAS SOME KIND OF GREY HOODIE.. BUT WHUT BRAND? & WHERE CAN I GET ONE?

ReplyDeleteAshley totally rocks I absolutely love her. She represents the real Black America that people don't get to see. The educated, classy, respectful, strong young ladies in our communities.
ReplyDeleteYay Ashley finally a young Black girl who isn't the loud, hood rat, hoochie. I am glad to see her on TV she totally raises the bar. I met her in public in LA and she was so anti Hollywood. She spoke and shook my hand like I was her girlfriend.
