B A (Happily) Married Couple...

Psychology Today published a great article on "An Arrangement of Marriages" - the 7 types of marriages couples find themselves in after the vows are taken and the "I do's" are spoken. Well into our 30's, most of us still believe in the fairy tale, handsome prince, and the happily ever after. It may still be possible, but it's important to pay attention to the signs. Do you fall into any of these categories?

Type 1 - Devitalized marriage: 40 percent of couples. There is pervasive unhappiness with all relationship dimensions and considerable instability. Both partners have considered divorce . They are critical of each other's personality. Their marriage is strictly utilitarian. They tend to be younger, married a shorter time, and have a lower income than other couples. Many are minorities. More of them come from divorced homes, and more of them were previously divorced themselves. They stay together for lack of alternatives.

Type 2 - Financially focused: 11 percent of couples. These couples have conflict and are unhappy in their communication and the way conflicts are resolved. They are dissatisfied with the personal characteristics of their partner, and there may be bitter personal attacks. Their careers come before the relationship, and money or financial rewards hold them together. Their single relationship strength is financial management. A high number of husbands and wives in such utilitarian relationships have considered divorce.

Type 3 - Conflicted: 14 percent. They are dissatisfied in many facets of the relationship - personality issues, communication, conflict resolution, and sexuality - and they may avoid or fail to settle issues between them. Instead, they focus on and gain satisfaction from outside experiences such as leisure, the children, religious life. But a high percentage of both partners have considered divorce.

Type 4 - Traditional: 10 percent. They are moderately satisfied with many relationship elements, while their sexual relationship and the way they communicate are sources of distress. They are not as critical of each other's personality as Types 1, 2 and 3. Their strength lies in a satisfying religious life and good interaction with extended family and friends. The marriages are relatively stable. These couples tend to be older, married longer, white, and Protestant.

Type 5 - Balanced: 8 percent. They are moderately satisfied with most relationship areas, with real strengths in communication and problem-solving. The biggest problem is financial management. They have higher than average agreement on leisure, child-rearing, and sexuality. They place a high value on the nuclear family. Still, over a quarter have considered divorce.

Type 6 - Harmonious: 8 percent. They are highly satisfied with each other, the expression of affection, and their sexual life. But they are self-centered, viewing children as a burden and parenting as a source of distress. It may be that, when a problem develops in this family, it shows up in the child.

Type 7 - Vitalized: 9 percent. They are highly satisfied with almost every dimension of their relationship and get along well. They are personally integrated, have strong internal resources, and agree in most external areas. They develop difficulties but resolve them well. They are economically better off than most others, and tend to be older, married longer, white, Protestant. They tend to be in their first marriage and come from intact families.

How has creativity played a roll in your career path(s)?

Man, it has played the leading role in my career. I explore options in my career that give me 100% creative control because that's how important I feel creativity is. Now I'm not saying that I get 100% creative control all the time, but that's always the goal. As my career evolves I'm coming closer to achieving that goal.

NY or LA?

NY all day. I love the movement in New York and I'm constantly inspired by the streets, the people, the multitude of cultures, and the abundance of self expression that exists in the city.

Why did you the start Hot Air collection, and what's your role in the company?

Man, I was sitting around one day watching YouTube and I saw a time lapse clip of hundreds of balloons lifting towards the sky. The patterns on the balloons inspired me and I was like, wow those could translate well to clothing - after all, a hot air balloon is fabric just like a shirt. From there, I created a line of shirts and shared them with my boy, Bee Nyguen, who believed in the concept and brought it to his team Sound In Color, which was a music label at the time that was also dabbling in fashion. That's where another partner, Diego Carlin, got involved and took the brand far with his skills. Then Bee got his buddy Duke Wu involved, and he blessed us with the funding knowledge. Charlie Muff plays behind the scenes, and I'm about to blow his spot because you can't have a successful brand without Charlie...There are so many roles that make Hot Air a success, and I'm still not doing it justice. Who are you designing for?

We design for the person that's not scared to try something new. For the person who loves attention.

What are most people surprised to learn about you?

Ha, is that a trick question? I really don't know. I have so many sides to me, so I guess it depends on how you meet me. If you meet me a little tipsy you might be be surprised to know I'm actually kinda of shy. If you meet me in the midst of an intellectual conversation, you might be surprised to learn I'm quite goofy. If you meet me in goofy mode, you will be surprised to know that I'm very spiritual and interested in the endless bounds of understanding and challenging my spirituality.

Any tips for a young person looking to express themselves when challenged by resources?
Yes - ask a lot of questions. Don't be scared to ask. There are too many resources available via the Internet to not be able to find out an answer to something. The road ahead is going to be very tough, so just embrace that, march ahead and never look back. And never worry about how long the road is.

What's next for you and Hot Air?

I'm working on a network called Creative Control with my directing partner, Coodie. It's an online network that will take television and "Urban" content to another level. For Hot Air, we're going to keep pushing the limits and explore new ideas. We have an incredible Spring 2010 collection coming out.

The hunt for the best brunch spot in NYC is still on...Pre-basketball "Keep It Simple" revelations (see previous post), we made a stop at Nice Matin on the Upper West Side. Just steps from the famous Sarabeth's - known for it's ALWAYS perfect brunch, and 45 minute wait times, Nice Matin is visually appetizing, and promises a French Mediterranean fare that should be able to hold it's own. So did it?

The outdoor dining experience was superb! Rather than throwing bows with neighbors on the left and right, the tables were well-spaced, and the awning providing just the right amount to shade without taking over the sun rays. As for the food - the preparation was truly French with rich flavors shining through. Most importantly, the options were completely authentic to the region and spiced with fresh herbs (think: lamb sausage scrambled eggs, and orange buttermilk french toast). Plus, the coffee was on point! Definitely check it out the next time you want to get away with a simply prepared, but elegant brunch that pays homage to the French Riviera.

This weekend I had a profound experience in the most basic setting. A basketball court on the Upper West Side in New York City. After a leisurely brunch, I walked over to a nearby court on 76th St. where a few of my guys were playing their usual weekend pick-up games.

My friends aren't slouches, so physical fitness is no stranger, but to see my boys get together, sweat it out, and talk shit, was simply beautiful. By day, they are media executives, bankers, video directors, and beyond, and they spend their "9-5" doing things they love...for the most part. They don't, however, get to choose who they do it with. Somehow, the notion of these men taking 3 hours for themselves to come together, let out some physical aggression and bond over a ball, is what life is all about. Choices.

Like many cities, NYC has a way of pulling you in a million directions - brunch, sale in Soho, gym, pop into the office to catch up on a proposal, hit the Yankees game, then a comedy show with your cousin who came into town, and then, oh yea, let me see if this chick wants to meet up for a drink? All in one day!

But getting it all in and "chasing" a day just isn't that satisfying when you have nothing to savor. As a personal offender of making weekend lists, and double/triple booking, I learned a great lesson this weekend. Find a happy place. Be selfish with my time and choices. And, most importantly keep it simple.

It's time for the West Coast to get a little more loving, and I have a lot to give. Katana gets an easy A+ on food, service, ambiance, and proximity to anywhere you would want to be in West Hollywood on a Friday night.

This Japanese Robata and Sushi Bar offers small plates for the diner who wants to keep it light with sashimi or a few rolls, but it also caters to someone who wants something a little heartier. (Robata is a method of cooking on a Bincho charcoal grill, which apparently leads to perfectly seared meats - love!) I recommend the Rock Shrimp Tempura, and the Short Ribs.

This is L.A., so Katana did not disappoint when it comes to the "pretty people". The crowd was good-looking, in-shape, and the model/actresses were definitely in effect at the hostess stand. And of course, a celeb and ball player or two were in the house.

The icing on the Molten Chocolate Cake our superb server comped for us, was the view. Katana has a sizable open dining terrace with a view of Sunset Blvd. and the comings and goings at the Mondrian across the street. So charming. So L.A.

Bridesmaid DO's and DON'Ts

Wedding Season is upon us, and it's a wonderful time of love, reunions, new unions, and overall commitments. One commitment, not to be underestimated, is that of being a bridesmaid. You have to commit your time, money, and most of all - patience. And even though a bridesmaid is charged with supporting the bride at all costs, there is a limit. Let's explore a few, and feel free to add to the list!

DON'T agree to be a bridesmaid just because your co-worker just got engaged, is new to the area, and doesn't have any friends.
DO be gracious when asked to serve as a bridesmaid, regardless of the answer, and make the decision that's right for you.

DON'T agree to gain weight, just because the bride wants to look better than the entire bridal party.
DO feel free to give input on the style of the dress. Not everyone looks good in a satin slip dress.

DON'T agree to be a bridesmaid just so that you can meet one of the groomsmen.
DO remember that as a member of the bridal party, you are a representation of the bride and groom. So keep it classy!

DON'T agree to pay for EVERY trip, cake, and miscellaneous activity when your bride has champagne taste on a Bud Light budget. It's not your job to supplement her expenses.
DO make sacrifices with your time and energy to attend all "required" events and support your bride.

DON'T for a second think the wedding is about you, just because you're in the bridal party.
DO be genuinely happy for the bride, be at her beckon call, and give her a few allowances on wedding day.

Q: Why did you create a Michael Jackson tribute line?
A: I decided to do an MJ line because I'm a designer. This was a great opportunity
to express my own feelings towards the man through the products I put out
there.

Q: What makes your collection distinct?
A: My line is distinct from others in that it covers an entire spectrum of styles.
There's vintage tees, trendy tees, and what I view as high fashion looks.
However the collective goal is to have shirts that stand apart within their
respective genres. For example silhouette tees often lend themselves to high
fashion or trendiness. I chose to place a spin on the silhouette by activating it
with a custom montage.


Q: What do you have coming up next?
A: Well, you can expect a line of sport-themed women's and men's tees to be designed
by Kobe Saki, and released under a start up label. The name is hush for now, but
the label has meetings scheduled with a sports agency representing one of the
top NBA draft picks. It should be a hot line.

There's something to be said to keeping a hidden treasure...well, hidden. The selfishness has come to an end, and I've held out long enough. Revealing (drum roll)...Taboon. An old apartment near Hell's Kitchen led to an exploration of everything west of the A/C line. One of the best discoveries to date was Taboon. Coined as "Middleterranean" cuisine, with a special mastery of cooking meats to perfection, with simply pleasing, yet complex spices.

My best kept secret is also known for their Taboon baked bread - their house focaccia, drizzled with olive oil, and other goodness. It used to be served in unlimited supply, but the restaurant pulled back to 1 loaf per table once they discovered that patrons could indulge on this bread and wine alone until closing hour. Bottom line - this tasty bread sets the tone for brilliant things to come. Check it out for yourself!

B Reviewed: Electrik Red - "How To Be A Lady"

You may have heard a little buzz about Electrik Red, but you may not have heard their music. This sexy quartet, produced and put on by The Dream and "Tricky" Stewart, have been together for over 6 years (3 were dancing for Usher back in the day) when Sarah insisted she bring in her best friend from Toronto. It's a good thing she did because Naomi has a lot to do with the sound of the album.

Speaking of the sound - Electrik Red's How To Be a Lady is like T-Boz mixed with classic girl group swag, sing-long songs, sprinkled with a few anthems. And basically, if you like what The Dream has been doing, you're going to love these girls. "So Good" has a laid back, cool vibe, while "Freaky Freaky" pushes the envelope with more experimental sounds, "Drink in My Cup" is a sensual club banger, and "On Point" is aggressive and has been a staple on my gym play list since I got the album. You'll find a little amusement in the overuse of strategically placed expletives, which will dramatically affect their radio play in a good or bad way (jury is still out). On top of everything else, I had a chance to meet these girls, and they are sexy, confident (teetering on cocky), and lovely - which backs up the music and their entire flow. It's a wonder Tameka Raymond ever had a chance if these girls were in the building! Overall - hot! B-Life Rating: A-

It's a small world after all, isn't it? Especially when living in NYC, life is 6 degrees of separation and you've never met a "stranger." While contemplating the highs and lows of this tiny bubble we live in (in NYC and beyond), I started making a mental check list of the pros and cons...

Pro: You'll always find someone you know (or have met before) at a party.
Con: It's conceivable that you have already seen those same 150 people before at a previous gathering, and have already determined how well you do or don't want to get to know them.

Pro: A solid (or solid enough) reference call can be made if you need a background check.
Con: They can do the same to you.

Pro: It's easy to get information about who, what, when, where, why - to go, do, buy, think, taste, etc.
Con: Group think.

Pro: 9 times out of 10, someone at work, at brunch, or in the salon can appreciate your story cause they are somewhat familiar with the characters.
Con: It's gossip. And you will get busted.

Pro: You know he (or she) is an AMAZING catch before you officially meet them.
Con: Your line sister (or brother) already dated them.

Pro: You have a built in network before you move to the city.
Con: The city is clique-ish. Did you really sign up for 4 more years of college?

Pro: Theoretically you always have the option to "switch it up."
Con: It starts to feel so claustrophobic that "switching it up" might mean moving to a different city.

All in all, I wouldn't trade it, but it does have it's drawbacks. What about you?

It seems so obvious for someone to combine 2 things that we love with the same intensity - a nice glass of bubbly and a frozen sorbet. Brilliant. The Wine Cellar Sorbet company has done it to perfection with their varieties of "adult desserts for sophisticated palates" that range from Cabernet Sauvignon to Sake. The dream team behind this heavenly combination - Bret Birnbaum and David Zablocki - are from Queens, and based in BK, so we have to give them a special shout for creating a sensational indulgence to quench our social needs and sweet tooth. I have a feeling it's going to be a sinfully delicious Summer.

WORK OUT

When you're out of work, you should be in the best shape of your life. Get in the gym, get to the park, and get it in. Working out is also a great way to release some endorphins and maintain a positive attitude.

LEARN ANOTHER LANGUAGE

You've been talking about taking up another tongue ever since you fulfilled that last language requirement your Sophomore year of college. Now's the time to carpe' diem and sign up for a class or cop Rosetta Stone. Muy bien!

RECONNECT WITH FAMILY

When we're pounding the pavement, we have every excuse not to make it home for a reunion or an anniversary. Use this time to reconnect with those that invested time (and money) in you. You might just discover a little more about yourself to get you back on the right track.

STUDY FOR GRAD SCHOOL ADMISSION

No need to sign up for Kaplan or the Princeton Review, but borrow books from a friend who recently took a test that you've been considering, and put in an hour a day. Who knows? You might find that school is the next best option - and this way, you'll already be a few paces ahead (minus the pressure).

INCORPORATE!

The paper work is relatively easy. The tax deductions are sweet. Make that side hustle your main dish while you're in transition. Perhaps you'll unleash your inner-Donald and strike gold with a big idea? Go for it!

TAKE A TRIP

Not a vacation...To clarify, this is not a Cabo San Lucas plug, but you should take a trip where you can learn something about yourself, the world, and how you fit into it. Hint hint: road trip.

VOLUNTEER

When you've fallen on tough times, its actually the best time to reach back and do something for someone else. Volunteering will help you put everything in perspective. It's really not that bad. Plus, a little good karma goes a long way.

I stumbled upon Travelista TV and was instantly in love and equally envious of Teri & Andrea - two spirited sisters traveling the world, and living life to the fullest - their way. For instance - Teri takes belly dancing lessons in Marrakesh, and insists that she can't let the instructor out dance her, so she shakes it a little harder and puts her own twist on the age-old dance. Love!

The B-Life had the opportunity to get to know author Mitzi Miller, a little better. Now it's your turn. Once she determined her path and what she did NOT want to do, she accomplished a lot in a short amount of time. Sound familiar? Let's all take a Mitzi-moment to reflect...

Q: I read your story. How did you make a switch from the business to the editorial side of magazine publishing?

A: Did you really “read my story”? Wow, you make it sound like I led some type of some scandalous, future Hollywood tell all, scandalous type of life!! HA! Somehow, I don’t think I’m quite that interesting. But to answer your question: I didn’t really ‘know’ that I wanted to switch to the editorial side of the magazine business. However, I did know that I wanted no parts of marketing and sales. I am so not a numbers person! I’ve always loved to read- books, magazines, newspapers whatever I could get my hands on. So when the editorial internship opportunity presented itself, I jumped at the chance.

Q: What were your days as the ‘face of Honey Magazine' like? How do you feel about Honey’s comeback?

A: Working at HONEY was one of the best periods of my life. Not only did I have the pleasure of learning from and working with some of the most amazing and talented people in the publishing/entertainment industry, but I essentially also wrote my own ticket. From surfing in Hawaii to learning how to drive stick shift on a brand new Porsche, every month I got to choose my own adventure for my ‘Road Trippin’ column.

Q: Which books have you authored, and can you give me a quick description of each in 10 words or less? (This is tricky – kinda like haiku).

A: The Angry Black Woman’s Guide To Life - How to claim/ work being an ABW to your benefit.

The Vow - Three scandalous, fabulous and determined BFFs plot to get married.

HOTLANTA (3-book series) - The hottest Af-American teen series on the shelves.

Q: Where you do you get the inspiration for these books? Are they totally fictional or are they based in any truths from your life?

A: I am continually inspired by the wonderful men and women in my life. I’ve been blessed with a colorful family and fabulous friends so there’s never a dearth of fodder surrounding me. I believe the best stories always include a little bit of truth. Now which part of the drama is mine? That’s for you to guess.

Q: What is your next project?

A: Hmmm, that’s a good question. Well, it feels like I’m always working on my blog- www.mitzimoments.blogspot.com. But in addition, I’m currently the EIC of a boutique athletic lifestyle magazine named SET. (Which I must say, has been an interesting experience because I’m about as far removed from anything sports related as a girl can get.) Oh and I’m feverishly working on my next book proposal… at least what I keep telling my agent.

Q: What advice do you have for a young authoress or magazine editor?

A: Whatever it is that you’re doing, be authentic and enjoy it. You’ve got to believe in your story in order for anyone else to do so.

Q: What are the most certain and uncertain things about your life right now?

A: I am certainly happy. Nothing beats being able to live life on my own terms.
I am uncertain about tomorrow. Every day is a new opportunity to start over, who knows what I’ll decide to do when I open my eyes in the morning.

Q: What would you want a reader to “B” after they experience your work? In other words, what impact do you want one of your novels to have on them?

A: “B” moved. Whether its laughter, empathy, anger or disbelief, I hope my words always make readers feel something.
